Dubai Hosts First Future of Construction Legathon Event

Dubai Municipality has held the first Future of Construction Legathon at Emirates Towers, bringing government entities, industry stakeholders, innovators and specialists together to address regulatory and legislative challenges linked to emerging construction technologies.

The event also saw Dubai Municipality and Dubai Future Foundation sign a cooperation agreement under Sandbox Dubai.

The agreement creates a framework for regulatory experimentation and collaboration in Dubai’s building and construction sector.

Testing New Construction Technologies

Participants examined specific regulatory challenges and developed practical solutions designed to support innovation while maintaining governance and compliance.

The focus included stronger coordination between government entities and the private sector.

The initiative also aims to broaden participation in shaping future building regulations and licensing requirements and explore ways for regulation to respond more effectively to technological change.

Smart Built Environment Sandbox

Under the cooperation agreement, Dubai Municipality and Dubai Future Foundation will initially work within the Smart Built Environment sandbox group.

The scope may expand into other areas agreed by both organisations.

The cooperation will support regulatory and innovation experiments, knowledge exchange and the testing of new approaches in Dubai’s construction sector.

Both entities will contribute to designing experimental use cases, including objectives, success indicators and evaluation criteria.

Dubai Municipality will coordinate relevant technical departments and establish the requirements and controls for assessing construction technologies and pilot projects.

Dubai Future Foundation will support coordination and documentation through the Sandbox Dubai platform.

Evidence to Guide Future Regulations

Evidence and lessons generated through the experiments will be analysed to inform future policy recommendations and regulatory frameworks.

Where solutions are successfully validated, the two entities will also assess opportunities for wider adoption or replication within Dubai.

Maryam Al Muhairi, CEO of the Buildings Regulation and Permits Agency at Dubai Municipality, said the Legathon is intended to create clearer pathways for new ideas and technologies to be examined, tested and evaluated while maintaining governance and compliance standards.

Support for Innovators

The cooperation will support engagement with innovators, start-ups, scale-ups and local and international technology providers.

Both organisations will provide channels for new technologies, products and business models to be demonstrated, tested and assessed, while connecting innovators with relevant government and industry stakeholders.

The initiative will also include workshops, training programmes and knowledge-sharing activities to strengthen institutional capabilities related to the regulation and adoption of innovative construction technologies.

Future-Ready Construction Sector

Dubai Municipality said the initiative supports wider efforts to develop a construction ecosystem that combines effective regulation with innovation, sustainability and future readiness.

The Future of Construction Legathon and Sandbox Dubai cooperation create a structured process for testing emerging technologies and using evidence to inform regulatory development in Dubai’s construction sector.
