Domaine de La Sylviane Valbonne French Riviera historic estate for sale

Domaine de La Sylviane, a historic estate near the medieval village of Valbonne on the French Riviera, has come to market through Carlton International.

The property carries centuries of Provençal history, a connection to Monaco's royal family and a rather unusual cultural footnote: English pop rock band Duran Duran reportedly used it as a base during the 1980s while recording their third studio album.

What the Estate Comprises

Named La Sylviane after the daughter of a general in Napoleon's army, the estate was first settled in the 13th century as an agricultural hub worked by monks.

The main residence dates to 1697. It sits within 10 hectares of land containing over 500 olive trees, which produce nearly 1,000 litres of oil annually.

  • 23 rooms in total, including 16 bedrooms across multiple buildings
  • Main residence: six bedrooms, built in 1697
  • Three-storey adjoining cottage with an independent two-bedroom apartment
  • Two further two-bedroom villas set around a courtyard
  • A gym room, pool house, tennis court bordered by fruit trees
  • Garage accommodating six cars
  • A resident caretaker's apartment at the entrance to the property

The Location's Case for Itself

Valbonne sits inland from the coast, away from the yacht-lined bays and summer crowds that define the Riviera's more familiar face.

Philip Weiser, founder and CEO of Carlton International, described it as a part of the region where luxury is measured not by visibility but by authenticity.

The estate is 20 minutes from Nice International Airport and 15 minutes from Cannes, placing it within easy reach of beaches, Michelin-starred restaurants and some of Europe's best golf courses, while remaining firmly in the quieter, olive-grove landscape of inland Provence.

Nearby destinations add further appeal. The hilltop village of Mougins, regarded as the gastronomic capital of the French Riviera, is close by. So is Biot, known for its glassmakers and Grasse, the world centre of perfumery.

The village of Valbonne itself holds a Friday morning market at its Place des Arcades square, a centuries-old public space that remains the social and commercial heart of the community.

History That Precedes the Glamour

Weiser noted that estates like La Sylviane predate the Riviera's modern identity entirely. Long before Cannes welcomed film stars and Cap d'Antibes became synonymous with grand hotels, the region was a land of monks, olive growers and hilltop villages whose rhythms followed the seasons.

The property was also, at some point, home to members of Prince Rainier III of Monaco's family before passing to its current owners.

For buyers drawn to provenance as much as specification, that layering of history across more than seven centuries makes Domaine de La Sylviane a genuinely difficult estate to replicate anywhere on the Côte d'Azur.
