TN Working Women's Hostel Scheme: Benefits & How to Apply

For many women who move away from their hometowns in search of jobs, finding safe and affordable accommodation can be just as challenging as finding employment itself.

Rising rents, security concerns and the high cost of living often make independent living difficult, especially for those starting their careers. To address this, the Tamil Nadu government runs the Government Working Women's Hostel Scheme, which provides subsidised accommodation to eligible working women living away from their families.

Implemented by the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department, the scheme is aimed at women from lower and middle-income groups by offering safe accommodation at nominal rents.

The scheme offers subsidised hostel accommodation at affordable monthly rents: women staying in Chennai pay Rs 300 per month, while those residing in hostels located in other districts pay Rs 200 per month.

In addition to low-cost accommodation, residents are provided with food and electricity, with the associated charges shared among the occupants.

Eligible beneficiaries can continue to stay in the hostel for a maximum period of three years, giving women a stable base as they establish themselves in a new city.

Eligibility and documents required

To be eligible for the scheme, the applicant must be a working woman with an income not above Rs 25,000 if situated in Chennai, and Rs 15,000 for other districts in the state. Applicants need to submit the following documents:

• Employer's certificate
• Income certificate
• Proof of residence showing they belong to a district or place other than where the hostel is located

Applicants can apply for the scheme through either the online or offline mode.

How to apply online

• Collect the required documents and self-attest them wherever necessary
• Visit the nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) to complete biometric verification
• Fill in the online application form
• Upload the required documents and submit the application
• Collect the acknowledgement or receipt containing the submission date, time and unique application number, where applicable

How to apply offline

• Obtain and print the prescribed application form and fill in all mandatory details
• Affix a passport-sized photograph, signed across if required
• Attach self-attested copies of the required documents
• Submit the application to the District Social Welfare Officer, the Superintendent of the Government Working Women's Hostel, or the Extension Officer (Social Welfare)
• Obtain an acknowledgement or receipt containing the submission details and a unique identification number, where applicable
