Residents of Colaba, Cuffe Parade, and Fort can now register and track civic complaints through WhatsApp.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched an AI-powered chatbot. It aims to make grievance redressal simpler, faster, and more transparent.
Municipal commissioner Ashwini Bhide launched the chatbot, called "Hello A Ward," on Friday.
The platform was initiated by BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar, who represents Ward 226. It lets residents report civic issues without downloading a separate mobile app or filling out lengthy forms.
The chatbot handles ward-level complaints. These include garbage disposal, water supply, road repairs and malfunctioning streetlights.
Other civic issues under the BMC's jurisdiction are also covered. Private residential building disputes are excluded from its scope.
Residents can report a problem by messaging the chatbot on WhatsApp and uploading a photograph of the issue.
The AI assistant then collects the necessary location details. It identifies the BMC official responsible for addressing the complaint.
Once the resident confirms the details, the system generates a unique complaint number.
It also provides a summary of the grievance for future reference. For example, a resident reporting uncollected garbage along 1st Pasta Lane in Colaba can upload a photo and share the location through the chat.
The complaint is then directed to the concerned official.
The platform lets residents track their complaint through every stage.
Status updates are shared directly on WhatsApp. Before-and-after photographs are provided when work is completed. This allows residents to verify whether the issue has been addressed.

Narwekar said the chatbot was introduced after several months of trials. The goal is to resolve routine civic problems within a stipulated timeframe and improve accountability among officials.
He said the chatbot minimises human intervention but fixes accountability on the concerned officials.
He added that he remains available to residents whenever his intervention is needed. He said the chatbot will keep improving based on citizen feedback.

The initiative seeks to reduce the need for repeated follow-ups and visits to municipal offices.
It gives residents a direct channel to report complaints and monitor their resolution.
The platform's effectiveness will depend on timely action by the departments concerned and consistent updates on the status of complaints.
