Union Minister Manohar Lal announcing 427 crore rupees worth of infrastructure development projects for Tripura

In a significant boost to the developmental roadmap of Northeast India, Union Minister for Power, Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, has announced a major financial package exceeding ₹427 crore for the state of Tripura. This substantial investment is earmarked for the comprehensive modernisation of urban infrastructure and the strengthening of the state's power capacity. Following a high-level review meeting with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, the Union Minister, emphasised that these initiatives are critical for enhancing civic amenities and ensuring the state reaches a power generation capacity of 300 MW by 2027.

Modernizing Urban Sanitation and Waste Management

A primary pillar of the new announcements is the transformation of urban sanitation through institutionalised waste management. Key projects and funding allocations under this vertical include:

  • The allocation of ₹100 crore for a scientific waste management facility at the DC Nagar dumping site near Agartala, which is currently nearing completion.
  • Development of 11 new Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) across various urban areas, with a deadline for operational status set for December 2026.
  • An additional ₹27 crore sanctioned specifically for the beautification and sanitation of priority urban centres, including Agartala, Dharmanagar, Melaghar, and Udaipur.
  • A statewide survey to identify pending sanitation requirements is scheduled to be completed by June 20, 2026, after which additional financial assistance will be released.

Strategic Overhaul of the Power Sector

In the energy domain, Minister Manohar Lal directed a shift toward clean energy and financial viability for the state's power distribution companies. The state has committed to converting all government consumers to prepaid metering by August 2026 to improve revenue collection and reduce system losses. Furthermore, under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, Tripura is targeting the installation of approximately two lakh rooftop solar units by March 2027, leveraging specialised vendors from Delhi to expedite the rollout.

Future Outlook: Urban Challenge Projects and Digitalisation

Looking ahead, the Minister disclosed that Tripura has proposed extensive urban infrastructure projects worth ₹1,200 crore under the Urban Challenge Projects Fund. This ambitious proposal utilises a tripartite funding model involving the Centre, the State Government, and institutional finance. As these initiatives gain momentum, the integration of smart metering and advanced grid management is expected to make Tripura's power sector self-sufficient while providing a template for technology-driven urban governance across the North Eastern region.
