Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the inaugural run of the 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper Express connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai on November 1, 2026.
The overnight service is set to begin regular operations on November 2 in the Mumbai-Bengaluru direction and November 3 on the return route, improving rail connectivity between the two metropolitan cities.
The inaugural special train departed from Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru and was scheduled to reach Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai at 6:15 am on Monday, according to officials.
The 16-coach train introduces an overnight travel option between Bengaluru and Mumbai.
South Western Railway said the service is expected to offer passengers a comfortable overnight journey while improving connectivity between Karnataka and Maharashtra.
The Bengaluru-to-Mumbai service will depart SMVT Bengaluru at 7:45 pm and arrive at CSMT Mumbai at 11:55 am the following day. It will operate six days a week, except Mondays.
For the return journey, the train will leave CSMT Mumbai at 8:10 pm and reach SMVT Bengaluru at noon the next day. The Mumbai-to-Bengaluru service will operate six days a week, except Tuesdays.
The regular service will travel through Anantapur and Guntakal in Andhra Pradesh before entering Karnataka again. It will stop at Raichur, Yadgir and Kalaburagi, then pass through Solapur, Pune and Kalyan in Maharashtra before reaching Mumbai.
The inaugural special service included additional stoppages at Hindupur, Dharmavaram and Lonavala. These stations were listed as part of the inaugural run rather than the regular service route.

During the flag-off event, Vaishnaw announced a proposed next Vande Bharat Sleeper service for Karnataka. The train is expected to originate from Bengaluru, connect parts of North Karnataka towards Hubballi, and continue towards Pune and Mumbai.
Vaishnaw said the route for the newly launched service was finalised after consultations with Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi, V Somanna and H D Kumaraswamy, among others.
He also noted that the service would connect areas of North Karnataka that had previously lacked comparable train connectivity.
